Bad apple operators

Positive action is now likely to be taken by the ACMA against the few 'bad apple' operators who disregard the regulations and licence conditions determinations.

When you next hear someone on air who says 'no-one is going to tell me how I use my radio' it appears at long last they will eventually need to adopt an attitude change.

So called serial pests who maliciously cause harmful interference will get caught up in ACMA compliance and enforcement action. The era of doing nothing against them is coming to an end.

ACMA Manager Compliance and Investigations Section, Allan Major, initiated discussion on this matter with the WIA, resulting in a way forward to address problems on the amateur bands.

This followed a productive telephone hook-up involving Mr Major and other ACMA mangers, WIA President Michael Owen VK3KI and WIA Director Peter Young VK3MV.

The ACMA has a range of actions it can take against offenders that include administrative action such as warning notices leading to licence suspension or cancellation, re-testing the competency of licensees, through to criminal prosecution.

As a first step the ACMA increasing the regulatory and compliance information on its website. The amateur radio community now eagerly awaits action against offenders which will provide a deterrent to others.

The desirability of every radio amateur to try and do the right thing on air, setting an example for others especially newcomers, is essential for the well-being of the amateur radio we enjoy.

This will also require some leadership being shown by individuals, clubs and the Wireless Institute of Australia.
