‘Sham’ signal report bid quashed

July 1, 2009 by Arvadmin

A radio amateur in Texas has unsuccessfully tried to have the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) stop allegedly inaccurate signal reports given during contests.

Jack Najork W5FG petitioned the FCC asking that it sanction the ARRL for not taking action to prohibit or discourage what he describes as wholesale liar or false 5-9 blanket reporting.

The FCC responded that it has no interest in pursuing the matter primarily because the regulations governing the use of amateur stations does not require the exchange of a signal report.

Further it does not regulate amateur contests which are self-administered by the amateur community, and the FCC believes any concerns should be directed to the contest sponsors.
